Additional Linksys Compact Wireless-G Internet Video Camera Information

The Linksys Compact Wireless-G Internet Video Camera sends live video through the Internet to a web browser anywhere in the world! This compact, self-contained unit lets you keep track of your home, your kids, your workplace -- whatever's important to you. Unlike standard "web cams" that require an attached PC, the Internet Video Camera contains its own web server, so it can connect directly to a network, either over Wireless-G (802.11g) networking, or over 10/100 Ethernet cable. The advanced MPEG-4 video compression produces a high-quality, high-framerate, up to 320x240 video stream. The Compact Internet Video Camera's unique form-factor and wireless connectivity allows you to mount it on a wall nearly anywhere, or slip it into its included stand for desktop use. Once it's connected to your home network, you can "see what it sees" from any Windows-based PC in the house, while the video stream is secured from the outside world, hidden behind your Router. If you want the video to be visible from outside your home network, you can open an appropriate port on the Router, and then create password protected accounts to manage access to the camera, or leave it wide open for the world to see. The SoloLink domain service (trial sign-up included) lets you access your camera using an easy-to-remember "name", even if your home Internet connection uses a dynamic IP address. You can also turn on Security Mode, which tells the camera to send a message with a short video attached to up to three email addresses whenever it detects motion in its field of view. You can then log onto the live video stream if the situation warrants. The included Viewer & Recorder utility lets you record the audio/video stream to your local hard drive, "live" or on a predetermined schedule.

What Customers Say About Linksys Compact Wireless-G Internet Video Camera:

Spend a bit more and get a better quality product. You will be wasting your money with this one. Sometimes it works and sometimes it does not. Like many others I have always thought of Linksys as a reputable company with a decent product for the cost. This is definately not the case with the Linksys Compact Wireless-G Internet Video Camera I have owned this camera for a while now and after many wasted hours of trying to get it to work reliably I have given up. Even when it does work the picture is fuzzy and forget about getting a usable picture in any type of low light environment.

We used this camera a few times, but it's not really wireless (needs to be plugged into a router) and it does not work well for motion detection. It is very difficult to set up.It has poor picture quality.

Given that to do that will cost me more than a replacement from a different manufacturer (I'm not in the US) I won't bother.Edit: Don't bother to get this unless your subject is always in bright light. Dim light performance is lousy. They were accessible and responsive. All in all a waste of time. The only reason it doesn't get one star is the Linksys tech support (chat online). Unfortunately for me, not only will it not e-mail me. I got this because it is supposed to be able to e-mail you if it detects motion. it doesn't detect motion, and doesn't save video even if I set it to record. But they say I should return the camera at my cost, and they will ship me a new one by ground.

I hung up on the guy. Stay away from Linksys. and the customer support agent wanted to charge me for his support. I am sending it back to Amazon.com for a refund.

tried the chat line. This is the third Linksys product that has ended up in the trash. Would not connect wirelessly. I will never buy another one from Linksys no matter how cheap. Camera had arrived 30 minutes ago. Camera arrived defective.

Software only works with XP. new in the box. guy was nice. Linksys makes low quality products and provides poor support. I wish I could give it a negative number. Called customer support - Linksys agent said he would have to charge me.

but after 1 hour he even agreed the thing was dead on arrival.

No English manual. The other one is fine. (The vendors are currently engaged in trying to get standards set up and adopted.). The camera did come with a complete manual - in Spanish. No Firefox. I don't speak Spanish yet. If you want a Linksys camera that works properly, I have fully checked out the WVC54GCA.

This camera is definitely off the list.Next time, I will pay more attention to the reviews. It works fine and has a "standard" mjpeg data stream. (They were responsive and nice.). This one was a terrible disappointment. As stated by others, the WVC54GC only works with ActiveX in an Internet Explorer browser. Had to override two settings in Internet Explorer.

Doesn't matter. As standard as IP Cameras get anyway. I have two Linksys IP cameras. I had to call support to find out how to get images to show in Internet Explorer. The camera is essentially useless to me if it only works in an Internet Explorer window. This camera was inexpensive and I was looking for something to recommend to customers of my software, HandyAvi.
